Getting Tested with Symptoms or as a Contact

If you've got some unusual symptoms, or someone you've had sex with has told you they have an STI, it might be that you have an STI. Try not to worry, most are easily treatable.

Please take a look at our information pages below before getting in touch.

These can give you some clues about your symptoms, and also help you in deciding if the sexual health clinic is the right place to go. Some things are best treated at a pharmacy, whilst others are best looked at by your GP. We want you to get the right treatment as quickly as possible. Looking into your symptoms will prevent any unnecessary hold ups!

What Next?

If you think your symptoms are caused by an STI, you'll need to see one of our nurses. You can do this by:

- Booking an appointment at one of our 14 clinic locations, by calling our Central Bookings Team. Please be aware that we are currently unable to book appointments via email, unless you have an accessibility need. You can find our phone line opening times here.

- Attending on of our Walk In and Wait clinics. These run at our York, Scarborough, and Harrogate clinics through the week. Please visit our Find a Clinic page for further information. Please be aware that these clinics are in high demand, and we always advise booking an appointment where possible to ensure you are seen and your wait time is reduced.

During Your Appointment

If you've never had an STI test before and you don't know what to expect, don't worry! We're here to make the whole process smooth and easy.

During your appointment, the nurse will ask you some questions on your sexual history. We're a non-judgemental, embarrassment free zone, so please be honest. This helps us to help you!

You may be offered an examination during your appointment, as this can help your nurse make a diagnosis. We encourage this, but it is always your body, your choice.

Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea are tested for via urine sample or vaginal swab - you can do this yourself. HIV and Syphilis are tested for via blood test. Your nurse will let you know if there any other samples that need to be taken.

After Your Appointment

After your appointment, you'll be contacted with your results. This will usually be via text. If you need any treatment, or we need to see you again, you'll be contacted with more information.
