Getting Tested with No Symptoms

Often STIs can have no symptoms at all, which is why it's really important to get tested regularly.

It is recommended that you test:

  • Before and after each new sexual partner
  • Every 3 months if you are regularly changing partners
  • Every year if you're a female under the age of 25, to protect your fertility
  • Every year if you're a man who has sex with other men

When to Test

It can take up to two weeks for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea to show up in a test, four weeks for HIV, and twelve weeks for Syphilis.

If you think you have been in contact with an STI, please do not wait twelve weeks for testing, as we recommend that you undertake initial testing for Chlamydia and Gonorrheoa after two weeks. You can then return at a later date if required.

Getting Tested: Test and Go (TAG) clinic

If you don't have any symptoms, the best way to get tested for STIs is by booking in at one of our Test and Go (TAG) clinics.

These are 15 minute appointments with a Healthcare Assistant, where you will be offered testing for Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, HIV, and Syphilis.

Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea are tested through via urine sample or vaginal swab (you will do this yourself), and HIV and Syphilis are tested through a blood test.

You will receive a text message with your results within 10-14 days. If any treatment or follow up is required, we'll be in touch.

To book at TAG appointment, please contact our Central Bookings Team during opening hours.

Getting Tested: Walk In and Wait TAG clinic

Another option for asymptomatic testing is to attend one of our Walk In and Wait TAG clinics at our York, Harrogate, or Scarborough clinics. You can find out the timings of those by clicking here.

Please be aware that these clinics are in high demand, and we always recommend booking an appointment where possible, to ensure you are seen on the day and that your wait time is minimal.

If you do attend a Walk In and Wait clinic, please allow up to 2 hours to be seen.

Getting Tested: Young People

For younger people, there are some additional testing options, depending on your age and location. Please visit our Young People page for more information.
